The Geographical Information System Department of the Moises Bertoni Foundation is in charge of providing and generates geographical information according to the needs of the different areas of work of the organization, showing products that could help the technicians to take decisions in a effective way. Aside from all the digital cartography information that is constantly being updated, this department also is based on remote sensors technology, utilizing and analyzing satellite images of different resolution, to finally get to the requested information.
Part of the products that this department generates is the space information synthesis reached through visual material (usually maps) so this information could be understood by more interested people. The information generated is also used in publications, presentations and disclosure materials.
The GIS department has many activities, and one of them is the fire monitor within the protected areas that the MBF administrates. Also, this department is in charge of the control of furtive activities, flyovers, provision of the cartography information needed in the controlling and patrolling activities, location of areas where important species of fauna and flora are found, monitoring of changes of land use within the near areas to the reserve, identification and monitoring of biological corridors, identification of the degraded areas and finally identification and mapping of the properties that are near the reserve. Besides all these activities, this department generates the information that is used in the ecological evaluation works and technical feasibility studies needed to get the establishment of conservation areas.
