MBF’s works in the areas under its management.
The adopted management model has made the effective protection of the natural reserves that the MBF manages possible: Mbaracayu Forest Natural Reserve (Canindeyu department),core area of the Biosphere Reserve
with the same name; and Tapyta Natural Private Reserve (Caazapa department). Our work also benefits directly hundreds of families living in the areas of influence of these mentioned spots.
The objective is to promote the conservation of national sample representations of the ecosystems and to collaborate with the consolidation of the National System of Wildlife Protected Areas of Paraguay.
The reserves have an important body of park-rangers, the majority local to the areas of influence of the protected areas, including those of indigenous descent. To develop its activities in an efficient manner, park-rangers are continuously trained with the necessary equipment.
The Reserves have control posts and vehicles, distributed along strategic areas, where park-rangers develop the following activities:
- Control and protection of the Reserves, applying the precautionary principle for their ecological and physical integrity. The MBF implements a system of control and vigilance with advanced technology, including the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (SIG) to monitor and reduce the aggressions in the area (mainly due to illicit hunting and fishing). The work with local authorities is important for achieving the goal, and that is why activities are developed in conjunction with the National Police, Military, District Attorney, and others.
- Infrastructure Maintenance: Including paths and roads located around the Reserves. Also bridges, borders, and landing strips are maintained. In these jobs, local people are contracted, creating a desirable social impact.
- Decision-making based on scientific information: fundamental for managing the Reserves and that is why park rangers work closely –with respect to fauna and flora research– with the Research Management Unit, a highly valuable contribution for both parties because of their field knowledge.
