The experience MBF has developed and resented in the Recovering of Forest Degraded Landscape Seminar (Cordoba, Argentina, 2005) is “Restoration of
Forest Landscape through a model of reforestation and shared responsibility”. It is following described as a valid work alternative with the private sector in this area:
The work has been carried on in three private lands dedicated to agricultural and extensive cattle production, as well as agricultural mono-crop; these processes generate a strong pressure over water and soil resources. Selected lands on the process are Felicidad, Don Marcelo and Nueva Esperanza. The Project is a pilot model of 50 hectares of reforestation in each private land, and it could be extended on a bigger surface, after evaluation of each part of the process. Lands where selected supported in the use of the Geographical Information System, in order to define priority reforestation areas, and accurate possibilities of establishing connectivity corridors between main forest remains.
The project of reforestation with shared responsibility is based on the mutual financing of tasks. Diversity of the characteristics of each land, and the vision, objectives and commitment degree of their owners and administrators lead us to implement specific models for each land. However, the MBF is responsible of the expenses of technical support, provision of tree plants and staff capacitating. Land owners are responsible for the expenses of labor. And, obviously, they provide the land for these matters.
Reforestation is to be made with 16 native species: fruit trees, pioneers, and species which are easily adaptable to diverse soil conditions. Special care has been put in combining those species of recognized use for fruit eater-animals, as the pioneers and of faster growth.
At the end of the process of reforestation, land owners get the commitment of the sustainability of reforested areas. Trees cannot be used for producing wood, but it’s permitted their approach as providers of forestry products not for wood; such as forage, firewood, fruits, among others.
In the component of confinement of degraded areas the land owner will be responsible of expenses related to perimeter wire, and the MBF will establish vegetation baseline as well as constant monitoring. Preliminary studies are in face of design and starting of implementation; considering forest’s aspects, vegetation and fauna (birds and mammals).
Connectivity’s aspect is based on voluntary commitment to the criteria of land use by the community; it includes participation of little, medium and large land owners, and indigenous communities. By using pilot models witch are constantly being adjusted to particular characteristics and needs of each participant of the program.
This work method looks forward to generate action lines predisposed to be replicated in higher scales allover the Biosphere Reserve.
