The Reserve has 16 trained and highly equipped forest keepers; most of them are peasants and indigenous natives Aché from the buffer zone. The participation of the Aché accomplish the Nº 112/91 Law, which requires their incorporation in the protection and effective handle of the Reserve. There are also six control posts and vehicles, distributed in strategic areas, from where forest rangers develop their activities related to the protected
area and maintenance of administration infrastructure and buildings: biological station, forest rangers house, visitor’s house, visitor’s center and Chief of Reserve’s house. Almost 10 km. of roads into the Reserve are preserved and regularly improved, as are another 50 km. of roads in the surrounding area.
- Maintenance of infrastructure: Besides the maintenance of the roads, there’s also a regular repair of bridges, limit boarders and an airplane landing strip, with local workers.
- Decisions are always made based on scientific information, coordinated with the department of Investigation Management of the Moises Bertoni Foundation (MBF), this is a priority for handling protected areas.
Usual activities:
1. Consolidation of handling of the Mbaracayu Forest Natural Reserve (MFNR):One of the most important activities for this goal is to consolidate the Steering Committee of the MFNR, initiated in March 2006 in the city of Curuguaty. This Committee consists of local representatives of all sectors of the influence area of the MFNR, people responsible for its handling and national authorities, and permit it to establish a process of consolidation with all involved actors in the management of this particular portion of national territory.
The MBF also has accurate ecological evaluation of the nuclear area of the Biosphere Reserve and the Handling Plan for the MFNR. This action involves the participation of all the local communities.
2. Support to endure National Wildlife Protected Areas System (SINASIP): This action includes the empowerment of Private Initiatives of Conservation, to consolidate biological corridors in between the different protected natural areas, with a bio-geographical point of view. One of the most endangered bioregions of the country is the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest, where the MFNR is one of the most important conservation areas. The Management of Natural Resources Handling works directly in the MFNR, and also makes efforts to consolidate biological corridors to carry on the conservation of the area. This Management also promotes consolidation of private natural reserves in the Oriental Region; such as Private Reserve Ypetí, Private Reserve Kaí Rague, Private Reserve Morombí, and Private Reserve Cerrados del Tagatiyá. As well, it has worked and supported Chaco’s initiatives, like Private Reserve Toro Mocho, in alliance with Entidad Binacional Yacyretá, for the administration of Private Natural Reserve Yacyretá.
3. All these activities are focused to gather an effective participation of inhabitants or the surrounding area, regarding handling, protection and sustainable approach of natural resources of the protected zones, to support the process of increasing the quality of life of its inhabitants. The objective is to design and carry out actions that make it possible to create social, economical and agro-ecological conditions to improve economical growth and social appropriate conditions for a dignified life in harmony with natural resources.
4. The MBF has recently promoted, in alliance with other NGOs, the formation of a Paraguayan Net of Private Reserve Owners. This action looks for a space for exchanging ideas and experiences, planning actions, and in particular, to have access to these private initiatives and support them. It intends to be a strategic alliance with other organizations that have similar interests, through a Cooperation Agreement to improve private reserve actions in a national context. The idea is to find accurate and applicable benefits to private conservation actions, and to gather effective processes for their conformation.
